(sometimes called "Amazon stone") is a green variety of feldspar. The name comes
from the Amazon River where some green stones previously have been found, but it
is doubtful whether green feldspar occurs in the Amazon region.
The presence of Amazonite is limited, and mined almost exclusively in
Ilmenbergen, Russia, where it occurs in granitic rocks. More recently,
high-quality crystals have been found in Pike's Peak, Colorado, together with
smoky quartz, orthoclase and albite in a coarse or granite pegmatite.
Crystals of Amazonite can
also be found in Crystal Park, El Paso County.
locations in the US that provides Amazonite is Morefield Mine in Amelia,
Virginia. It also occurs in Madagascar, India, Kenya, Namibia, Russia and
Brazil, and Sweden.
For many years the source of the colour was a mystery; It was assumed that it
came from copper because copper compounds often have blue and green colours.
Later studies indicate that the blue-green colour is a result of small amounts
of lead and water.
Amazonite increases the sensitivity and awareness of your thoughts, feelings and
actions towards other people. It is a stone for those who want to go their own
way and take responsibility for their life, and it supports all kinds of change.
Amazonite gives you the courage to break up, and choose the path according to
your innermost desire.
