Apatite is a group of phosphate minerals, usually referring to hydroxylapatite, fluorapatite and chlorapatite, with high concentrations of OH−, F− and Cl− ions, respectively, in the crystal. The colour is often shades of green, blue-green or brown but apatite can also be colourless, yellow or violet. Apatite is one of a few minerals that are produced and used by biological micro-environmental systems and is the main component of tooth enamel and bone mineral. The hardness is 5 on the Mohs scale.
Apatite is infrequently used as a gemstone. Transparent stones of clean colour have been faceted, and chatoyant specimens have been cabochon cut. Key sources of apatite are Brazil, Burma and Mexico. Other sources are Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, India, Madagascar, Mozambique, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka and the United States. The apatite that occurs in Sweden is almost exclusively a mixture of calcium phosphate and calcium fluoride are present as assessoriskt mineral in most eruptive rocks. It can form large, well-formed crystals in passages of pegmatit.
In apatite iron ores, the content may amount to 5-10% as it does in mines in Kirunavaara, Leveäniemi, Malmberget and Grängesberg, Sweden.
