Amethyst is a violet purple variety of quartz. The name comes from the Greek expression 'a methustos' meaning "not drunk". Amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote for drunkenness, which is why wine goblet often was made out of amethyst.
In mythologi, it said that the Greek god of wine, Dionysus, was courting a maiden named Amethystos, but she rejected him. She prayed to the gods to remain chaste, and the goddess Artemis responded by turning her into a white stone. Humbled by Amethystos desire Dionysus poured wine over the stone as a offering, and the white crystals were stained purple.
In the Middle Ages soldiers weared amethysts in combat as it is believed to have a healing property and beads of amethyst were found in graves in England. The most common finding places for amethyst are Brazil, but it is also found in Uruguay and Madagascar. In Sweden, amethyst have been used as gemstones at least since the Viking times.

Amethyst stands for happiness, strength and health.
